Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Our eyes tell so much about us, sometimes giving away secrets we wish they didn’t! Artists and cosmetic surgeons alike will generally agree that the eyes are the most important aesthetic element of the face. We look at and into each others eyes. Verbal and nonverbal communication happens with the eyes. Sagging skin of the upper eyelids or bags and wrinkles of the lower eyelids can make you look tired, exhausted, and even a little angry when you are not. We can help you convey a message of health and vitality by keeping that youthful glimmer in your eyes.
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is one of the easiest cosmetic procedures to undergo. Most patients say it was so easy they wish they had done it years before.
The procedure for both the upper and lower eyelids is an outpatient procedure that can be done under local anesthesia or light IV sedation, also know as twilight anesthesia. General anesthesia is not needed. Recovery time is one week and is generally pain free.
Dr. Schell’s meticulous way of performing this surgery almost never leaves patients with bruising. She almost always performs her lower eyelid surgery via an internal incision so there is no scar and no change in the shape of the eyes. This is one of patients’ greatest fears about eyelid surgery, and is beautifully avoided by her technique. The excess skin of the upper eyelids is treated by an external incision, carefully hidden in the natural crease. She uses stitches thinner than a hair to minimize the final line. Laser resurfacing is often combined in the lower eyelid area to tighten the skin and erase wrinkles, leaving a natural youthful appearance. Often patients will have hollows and dark circles under their eyes, which may be associated with puffiness or not. Dr. Schell will address the total needs of the area, adding fullness where needed, correcting and removing excess when appropriate and always keeping your natural look and safety as her highest concerns.
